Hunters, Fishers and their Families Urged to Enjoy Outdoors Saturday for National Hunting and Fishing Day

Written by HLRBO| 9/25/2020

What better excuse to grab the fishing pole, head out to your deer stand and get it ready for the upcoming deer season and enjoy the Great Outdoors this weekend than National Hunting Day (9/26)? Though deer season isn’t quite underway yet in every state, National Hunting and Fishing Day is the perfect time to head out to the stand and prepare it for the fast-approaching Opening Day if it hasn’t already started in your state. You can also use the day to do some scouting, set up your deer cameras and check out deer leases if you haven’t already found one. Historically, the day has been used to recognize all that hunters and anglers have contributed to wildlife and conservation. Through license fees, proceeds from the Pittman-Robertson Act, and donations to conservation organizations, sportsmen and women have raised over $57 billion for conservation since 1937. Governors around the country including Texas, Nebraska, Arkansas, New York, Mississippi and Tennessee are encouraging residents to get outside this National Hunting and Fishing Day. Hunters and anglers are encouraged to invite others to join them in their outdoor excursions this weekend, whether it’s a spouse, child or grandchild, friend or neighbor. But perhaps the best way to celebrate the storied history and tradition that hunting has contributed to our country is to take someone hunting, fishing or shooting for the first time. Introducing new people to the outdoors is perhaps more important than ever in 2020 as we navigate the choppy waters of living through a global pandemic and our nation seems more divided than ever, what better time to bond over a love of the Great Outdoors?
Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) issued a proclamation supporting the special day saying in part “Our sportsmen and women were among the first conservationists to support the establishment of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) to conserve fish, wildlife, and their habitats, and through their license fees helped fund state efforts to provide for healthy and sustainable natural resources.” In New York, residents can fish without a license on Saturday to commemorate National Hunting and Fishing Day. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, “It’s no secret that early autumn offers some of the best fishing opportunities on the calendar, and New York is teeming with some of the best lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams in the Northeast just waiting to be explored,” Governor Cuomo said. “Fishing is a tradition in my family and in families across New York State, and I encourage everyone from experienced anglers to those who have never fished before to participate in this Free Fishing Day and spend some time together outdoors.” When you head out to enjoy the Great Outdoors, not only are you making lifelong memories but you’re also helping to pass along one of the greatest gifts you can bestow upon future generations: a love of the Great Outdoors and all of its beauty.
History of National Hunting and Fishing Day Saturday, September 26 marks our nation’s 48th annual National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHFD). Formalized by Congress in 1971 and signed as an official Presidential Proclamation by President Richard Nixon in 1972, NHFD is a great opportunity to come together and recognize the historical and ongoing contributions of the original conservationists – hunters and anglers. National Hunting and Fishing (NHF) Day brings together sportsmen and women to celebrate the rich tradition of hunting, target shooting and fishing with national, state, regional and local organizations hosting related events.
